How to Record Your Screen on Chromebook
Start a native screen recording without installing third-party software.
Last verified: February 21, 2026
Chromebook supports screen recording natively through the screen capture toolbar opened with Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows. Selecting the video camera icon rather than the camera icon switches the tool into recording mode, and you can choose to record with or without microphone audio from the toolbar before starting. Recordings save as WebM files to the Downloads folder and are viewable directly in the Chrome browser without converting.
Quick Steps
Follow in order for the fastest result.
- 1Press Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows to open the screen capture toolbar and select Record.
- 2Choose microphone audio on or off before starting. Avoid recording sensitive content.
- 3Stop recording from the floating toolbar, notification bar, or menu bar icon. The file saves to Videos or Downloads.
Still Not Working?
Try these if the steps above didn't help.
- Free up at least 500 MB of storage — recordings fail silently when storage is full.
- Note that streaming apps (Netflix, Disney+) intentionally block screen recording at the OS level.
- Update the OS if the Screen Recorder tile is missing from Quick Settings.
Verify the Fix
Confirm everything is fully working before closing this guide.
- Play back the saved clip immediately to verify audio sync and full visual coverage.
- Check file duration matches actual recording time.
